Wellpoint Maryland, Inc., a Medicaid health plan serving Maryland residents in every county across the state, earned 4 out of 5 stars in the National Committee for Quality Assurance’s (NCQA) 2026 Medicaid Health Plan Ratings, up from 3.5 stars the previous year. The health plan also holds NCQA Health Outcomes Accreditation and Community-Focused Care Accreditation, recognizing its work to understand and address the health and social needs of the populations it serves.

“Quality healthcare is measured by results, and our results show meaningful progress for the Marylanders we serve,” said Dr. Darrell M. Gray, II, President and CEO of Wellpoint Maryland. “We are helping more members manage chronic conditions, strengthening preventive care and working to remove barriers that stand between people and better health. These achievements reflect our responsibility to deliver care that meets the needs of our members and the communities we serve.”

Wellpoint Maryland’s improved rating reflects gains in key quality measures, including a 9.5-percentage-point increase in the rate of members whose high blood pressure was controlled. The health plan also earned a rating of 5 out of 5 for adolescent immunizations.

Wellpoint’s two NCQA accreditations recognize complementary approaches to improving healthcare quality. Health Outcomes Accreditation recognizes organizations that use standardized data collection and measurement to understand their populations’ health needs and address differences in health outcomes, experience or access. Community-Focused Care Accreditation recognizes organizations that use standardized data collection and community-based partnerships to understand and meet their populations’ nonmedical or social needs.

“Earning Health Outcomes Accreditation and Community-Focused Care Accreditation shows that an organization is making a breakthrough in providing excellent healthcare to diverse populations with different needs. I congratulate any organization that achieves this level of accreditation,” said Dr. Vivek Garg, President and CEO of NCQA. “Eliminating disparities in healthcare is essential to improving the quality of care overall.”

NCQA, a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving healthcare quality, released its 2026 Health Plan Ratings in September. The report evaluates more than 1,000 commercial, Medicare and Medicaid health plans on a 5-point scale based on patient experience, prevention and treatment. Wellpoint Maryland’s results appear in NCQA’s Health Plan Ratings 2026: Medicaid. The ratings provide consumers, employers and others with information to compare health plan quality and make informed healthcare choices.
